History
Liston and Clifton traces its origins back to 1930 when John R Windeyer commenced practice in Glen Innes which was one of three legal firms operating in the town at that time. John Windeyer’s cousin, Sir Victor Windeyer was a highly regarded Judge of the High Court of Australia between 1958 and 1972.
- Henry Liston joined the firm in 1947 and following the retirement of John Windeyer in 1949, Henry Liston practised under his own name.
- In 1960 he purchased the practice of F H Doyle, that firm tracing its origins back to 1898.
- J R Campbell joined the firm in 1965 and the firm became Liston Britt & Campbell in 1967 when Ian Britt joined the practice.
- This partnership ceased in 1971 and Henry Liston remained a sole practitioner until 1984 when David Loveband, who had joined the firm in 1980 and Henry’s son Bill, who joined in 1982, became partners under the name of Liston & Loveband.
- Henry Liston retired in 1989 after a total of 55 years in practise.
- John Liston, Henry’s younger son, joined the firm in 1990 but retired from the partnership in 1998 when he moved to Newcastle with his family.
- David Clifton joined the firm in 2000 and became a partner in 2003.
- The firm expanded to Tenterfield in May 2005 when the partners welcomed Kylie Turner to the firm.
- With the opening of the Armidale office in November 2005, the partners were fortunate to have Doug Bassett join the firm. Doug had practiced in Armidale for the previous two years.
- David Loveband retired as a partner in February 2006.
- The name of the firm changed to Liston & Clifton to in 2006.
